The 29th February is fast approaching and according to old Irish legend, women are allowed to propose to men on this day. As it only happens every 4 years it’s time to make the most of the opportunity.
I had a look into how this tradition came about….
The legend says that it was St Brigid who struck a deal with St Patrick in an attempt to balance the traditional roles of men and women. Similar to the way the 29th February is used to balance the calendar.
In some places the legend goes even further. Any man refusing a proposal of marriage on a leap day was expected to pay a penalty. In upper class society in many European countries the penalty was 12 pairs of gloves. The intention was that the woman would wear the gloves to save her from the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring.
So, remember ladies, when you ask him we hope he says yes but if he doesn’t maybe it’ll mean a new pair of shoes?
