"You will always be my greatest adventure" - Up
Traditionally a father will walk his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day to “give her away” to her groom. This goes back to the times when a groom would pay a dowry for his bride. While the dowry element is rare now, many people still follow the tradition.
Families, these days of course come in many variations and traditions aren’t so important. What’s more important is the bride and groom find their own ways to celebrate their special day.
That’s exactly what Samia Ghadie who plays Maria in Coronation Street has done. She broke with tradition and her daughter walked with her down the aisle. Speaking to OK magazine she is quoted as saying:
“I didn’t want her to give me away as she’s never going to have to give me away in her life, so she walked me down the aisle as Sylvain is getting Freya as well.”
We think this is such a beautiful idea and it highlights how every couple getting married should have their day as they want it.
Where brides have lost their father or he has been absent our brides have shared stories of their mum walking with them or a grandparent or brother.
Since there really is not right or wrong way to do things anymore, what will you choose?
